April

I didn’t want to go home.

No – I couldn’t go home.

Dex’s message had been quite clear, actually. If I went home without completing my mission, then Dex would have to send someone else to do it. What was worse was that Dex would try to kill me to silence me. I was almost certain of it. The prince wasn’t kind to people who failed him. Although he’d carefully chosen me for this mission, and although I hadn’t had a choice, failure would mean death.

“No,” I shook my head. “I don’t want to go.”

“What? But it’s your home.” Alixei seemed completely shocked that I didn’t want to go home.

“Please don’t make me go,” I whispered. I couldn’t do it.

“April, we’re taking you to Oceaile. You’re just tired. Go downstairs and get in the bed. We don’t have an extra chair up here.”

“I won’t do it.” I crossed my arms over my chest. I was starting to get really pissed. Who did this guy think he was? Just because he was bigger than me and stronger than me didn’t mean he was in charge of me.

“You will.”

“No.” I jutted my chin out petulantly. I didn’t even care that I probably looked like a snotty child talking back to her parents. Right now, I was trying to stand up for myself as best I knew how. That meant not taking crap from anyone.

It meant not taking crap from an alien.

“Alixei, storm’s rolling in,” Lion said. There was tension in his voice. He was worried. Good. He needed to be. If we were on the ship when the next storm started, we were going to be buried along with the ship. The chances of us escaping at that point were literally zero. We would die as soon as we ran out of air, which wouldn’t be long.

“Time to move. Go downstairs.” Alixei was watching me, but I just shook my head.

I wasn’t going to do it.

I wouldn’t bow down to him. As much as I wanted to obey Alixei, I couldn’t. I couldn’t let him shove me downstairs. I couldn’t let him take me back to Oceaile. Dex was going to kill me if he did. There was no way I could reasonably explain that to Alixei. If I admitted to him who I was and what I was supposed to do, then he would kill me. All bets would be off. Everything would be over.

He sighed and shook his head.

“I see you want to do things the hard way,” he told me. “Lion, drive.”

“Now?”

“Go!”

Lion shrugged and hit the controls. At the same time, Alixei grabbed me and hoisted me over his shoulder.

“What the hell are you doing?” I screeched, shocked at what was happening. He was carrying me. He was hauling me around like a damn caveman. He started climbing down the ladder.

“Something I could have done ten minutes ago.”

“Let me down!”

“Not a chance, little one.”

“I’m not little!”

Only, I was.

I pounded at his back, but it had no impact. As the ship lurched into the air, Alixei clung to the ladder.
